It had been an odd encounter, but I pressed onwards. After
hours of walking, it donned on me that I had no idea where I was going or why I
had left the other passengers. I was far too disoriented following the fire to
return the direction I had come. So, I would continue until I’d find something…someone.
The road veered, directing its travelers to the wilderness.
The gushing water roared, and yet I could still distinguish voices coming from the
direction of the river. It was flood season so the water nearly breached the forest
floor. As I moved closer, I noticed a young couple dancing. They dropped to the
floor to lie on their backs whilst staring at the clouds above. I tucked myself
behind a tree in the grove of cottonwoods and studied their surroundings. They
had built a house out of the trees with tamarisk walls and willows laid side by
side as a floor. It appeared as though there wasn’t a plant in the forest that
hadn’t come in handy when building their makeshift home. To the left and by the
fire, a chicken stood beneath a twig cage. To the right, a network of tunnels
lined the forest floor. I approached cautiously.
BANG! BANG! He was firing at me. I sprinted away, clutching
my bag and cigarette pack as best I could. If need be, I would abandon both.
