Week 1

I awoke with a kink in my neck. A pang of worry ran through me as I listened to the captain apologize for the terrible inconvenience. What inconvenience? Groggy and unable to gather my thoughts, I failed to recognize the severity of the situation.

The cabin floor vibrated beneath my feet as the rear wheels descended. We were about to land. The flight attendant motioned toward me, adjusting my seat to the upright position without my consent. I would be free of this uncomfortable seat soon, I assured myself.

I had arrived in St. Louis, or so I thought. Overhead, the flight attendant announced, “Again, we apologize for the inconvenience this may pose. We will do our best to ensure your safe and timely arrival in St. Louis…Wednesday evening.” The cabin roared. Several passengers’ call buttons chimed at once. My body stiffened, utterly paralyzed by the news. It was Monday.

Due to high winds and poor visibility, my flight to St. Louis had been diverted to an airport hundreds of miles away. I had two days and just under $300 to find my way to St. Louis in time...
